Al Hirschfeld Self Portrait Zinfandel 2016
California

Hollywood on Trial (1976)
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

Al Hirschfeld was an unmatched illustrator whose focus on Hollywood left us with a series of incredible impressions of the film industry’s many personalities and complexities. While enjoying this premier release, turn your attention again to Hollywood with a look at its historic ‘blacklist,’ as depicted in David Helpern’s fascinating Oscar-nominated documentary.

THE WINE

Al Hirschfeld’s iconic theatrical drawings defined Hollywood for nine decades. The first in a series of wines that celebrate this great illustrator and chronicler of 20th century culture, our Al Hirschfeld Self Portrait release is a silky California Zinfandel of style and distinction. Crafted with grapes from Lodi (Zinfandel’s spiritual home and Wine Enthusiast’s 2015 Region of the Year) and beyond, this oak-aged red overflows with lush, dark-berry flavors and subtle licorice characters. A delicious partner for roasted turkey, hearty pasta dishes, and more.

THE GRAPE

Zinfandel is California’s second most-planted red wine grape (behind Cabernet Sauvignon) – yet it’s often regarded as the state’s signature red. Originally from Croatia (where it’s called Tribidrag), this wanderer found its way to Puglia in Italy (they say Primitivo), then to California as fortune-seeking Italians immigrated there. Regardless of provenance or name, Zinfandel has earned a reputation for being fruit-rich and very food-friendly.

THE VINTAGE

GI_grapes_redgrapeoldvineCalifornia is on a real hot streak, and the 2016 vintage was no exception. Robert Parker says the Golden State’s had an “unprecedented and historic succession of great years, such as 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. It now appears 2016 will end up equally impressive. Talk about an ‘embarrassment of riches.’ … Nearly every vigneron and vintner I talked to was thrilled with what 2016 has produced.”

WITH FOOD

turk_Turkey_WineThis smooth, fruit-forward Zinfandel will pair well with a variety of dishes. It’s a delicious match for dark-meat poultry (think barbecued chicken thighs or even roasted turkey with all the trimmings). You could also take inspiration from the grape’s Italian heritage and serve this alongside hearty, tomato-sauced pastas or your favorite pizza.
