Alma Andina Malbec Reserve 2016
Mendoza, Argentina

Scarface (1932)
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14 @ 12:00 AM (ET)

Go with the original gangster classic with Paul Muni’s commanding lead performance and pair it with an equally dark and intense Malbec. For all its ferocity, director Howard Hawks has created a richly designed and beautifully photographed film that echoes the spectrum of savory and black fruit notes in your glass.

THE WINE

“Malbec has reached startling heights of quality in Argentina,” says Robert Parker. This modern wine phenomenon is one of our most popular varieties – and this deep, dark Reserve is a huge customer favorite. It hails from some of the world’s highest vineyards in Mendoza’s Uco Valley and has a history of gold-medal acclaim from the likes of the International Wine Challenge and Mundus Vini. Here comes the much-anticipated 2016 release, filled with the same intense, dark-fruit flavor and framed by inviting spices. Tell us what you think – share your review online.

THE WINEMAKER

Alma Andina comes from Andean Vineyards, a top estate with modern cellars in Mendoza and San Juan. An Australian native, Steve McEwen worked extensively at home and in many parts of Europe before deciding to do “just one vintage” in South America. However, fate had different plan for him. Steve fell in love – first with Malbec, then with an Argentinean. And he’s happily been here ever since.

THE REGION

WM_SteveMcEwenMendoza’s Uco Valley is home to some of the highest vineyards in Argentina (with plantings up to 4,500 feet above sea level). The valley’s warm days, cool nights, dry climate, and fresh Andean snowmelt are ideal for growing grapes, especially the country’s star red: Malbec. Bordeaux’s legendary Michel Rolland is just one of the many world-famous winemakers to set up shop here.

WITH FOOD

steak_skirtsteak_chimichurriSteve recommends serving his Alma Andina Reserve with the juiciest cut of steak you can find (Argentina, after all, is renowned for its gigantic rib steaks). Our favorite is marinated skirt steak with tangy chimichurri sauce, left. Vegetarians shouldn’t feel left out – the rich, deep fruitiness of this silky Malbec also tastes delicious with hearty bean or quinoa-based casseroles.
