Big Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald won well deserved Oscars for their roles as a young priest who revitalizes a failing parish and the crusty, old-fashioned Father who disapproves of the newcomer’s breezy style. Crosby has several opportunities to croon, including the hit song “Swinging on a Star,” and the sheer joy and optimism of the picture – released at the height of the war – led to its huge success at the box office. Enjoy it with the flavors of ripe citrus and zesty acidity of this delicious white wine.

THE WINE

Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc are all big stars in France, but they also thrive in South Africa, where the innovative Charles Back has been experimenting with them for years. The grapes for this luscious white were sourced mostly from Charles’s award-winning Fairview farm on the slopes of Paarl Mountain. Thanks to the great 2018 vintage (in which a hot growing season yielded grapes with intensely concentrated flavors), you’re in for an especially delicious treat.

THE WINEMAKER

Charles Back is “one of the great entrepreneurs, innovators, of the wine world,” writes Master of Wine Tim Atkin. In addition to running one of South Africa’s most successful wineries (and goat farm!), he’s a tireless champion for social justice. After years of fighting apartheid, he launched the Fairvalley Workers Association in 1997, giving his employees the chance to farm their own land. His talents in the winery and love of his land are why he won the 2014 IWC Lifetime Achievement Award.

THE REGION

WM_CharlesBack_team_goatSouth Africa’s Paarl is situated in the gorgeous Western Cape region. It was founded as a Dutch trading outpost in the 1650s and named for nearby Paarl Rock (the picturesque outcropping shimmers like a pearl – parel in Afrikaans – whenever it rains). While Chardonnay is the most important white grape here, other varieties also do well (as you’ll taste), soaking up the region’s brilliant sunshine.

WITH FOOD
