Château du Prieur 2015
Bordeaux AOC, France

Angel Face (1953)
SUNDAY, AUGUST 6 @ 02:15 PM

This red Bordeaux blend is a complex mixture of ripe red fruit aromas, elegant structure and fine tannins. Pour a glass and watch this compelling film noir from producer Howard Hughes and director Otto Preminger, featuring one of Jean Simmons’ strongest and most unexpected performances as the femme fatale. Her role opposite Robert Mitchum adds a layer of complexity to her already impressive career.

THE WINE

This is exactly the kind of small-batch, great-value Bordeaux we love to find for you. Château du Prieur hails from a family-owned estate just outside of storied Saint-Emilion and Bordeaux’s stellar 2015 vintage, “a fantastic year” that produced “rich and opulent wines” (critic James Suckling). It blends soft, plummy Merlot with splashes of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon, for added depth and structure. The 2014 release won gold from Gilbert & Gaillard – and we think this rich 2015 is equally impressive.

THE ESTATE

Château du Prieur lies in the heart of Bordeaux, just five miles from the Medieval town of Saint-Emilion (home to some of the region’s finest wines). It’s run by father-son team Didier and Arnaud Merit, the grandson and great-grandson of the château’s founder, Emmanuel Merit. The property boasts 55 hectares of vines, situated on sunny, south-facing slopes and grown on clay and limestone soils. These conditions yield beautifully ripe and concentrated grapes – you’ll taste the results in your glass.

THE REGION

Bordeaux is probably the most famous wine region in the world. With quality at an all-time high, there's never been a better time to be a fan of its classic reds. The word ‘Bordeaux’ is a derivative of au bord de l’eau, meaning ‘along the waters’ – so it’s no coincidence the highest quality vineyards are those nearest to either the Gironde, Dordogne or Garonne rivers.

WITH FOOD

We recommend decanting this lovely Bordeaux an hour or so before serving to open up all its complex aromas and flavors. When it’s time to pour, it makes a lovely match for savory red meats. Roasted leg of lamb, beef tenderloin or grilled steaks will all be delicious. If meat’s not on the menu, go for hearty pasta dishes like eggplant Parmigiana or a vegetable lasagna.
