Marx Brothers 2015
California

A Night at the Opera (1935)
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2 @ 06:00 AM (ET)

The brothers’ first picture with MGM is this rambunctious tale of an Opera company gone awry, headed by Groucho as Otis P. Driftwood – one of the great comedian’s most iconic roles. All three remaining brothers are represented in this wine’s mix of grapes (Zeppo had left the group after Duck Soup in 1933) and this is one of their most essentials films. Both are sure to be richly enjoyed.

THE WINE

The Marx Brothers have kept audiences laughing for over a century, and like a fine wine, they only get better with age. Just as each brother brings his own magic to the ensemble, the different grapes in this special red each contribute distinctive characters. But it’s Zinfandel that’s the star here, with its deliciously rich black cherry flavors, complemented by hints of vanilla. Crafted with fruit from prime-sited California vineyards (mostly in Lodi) and the stellar 2015 vintage, this unique red will delight with barbecued pork and, of course, a classic Marx Brothers film.

THE VINTAGE

Now is a great time to enjoy the bounty of the top-notch wines coming out of California. Following the very highly rated 2012, 2013, and 2014 vintages, our expert on the ground, Clare Tooley, tells us that winemakers are raving about the 2015 harvest. According to The Wine Advocate, “2015 has turned out to be spectacular, high-quality vintage” for the Golden State. And this exclusive red really showcases the richness of this great year

THE REGION

VY_California_Lockwood_1Lodi, Wine Enthusiast’s 2015 Region of the Year, has a grape-growing tradition dating to 1850. While the region’s famed for its oldvine Zinfandel (celebrated at the annual ZinFest on Lake Lodi), it’s increasingly known for top-notch Cabs, too. Its warm summer climate is tempered by occasional morning fog, helping prolong the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine for extra-concentrated flavor.

WITH FOOD

pork_slicesThis rich, black-fruit-packed red deserves an equally flavorful food pairing. While it will be delicious with savory red meats (think beef tenderloin or roasted lamb), it will really shine alongside pork. We suggest pairing it with chops or barbecued ribs slathered in a sweet-and-tangy sauce. It’ll also be tasty with hearty tomato-based stews or pasta dishes.
