Monte RoncáMonte Calvarina 2015
Soave DOC, Italy

Rome Adventure (1962)
Wednesday, January 25 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

“Golden Boy” Troy Donahue and newcomer Suzanne Pleshette fall in love (onscreen and off) in this 1960s travelogue from Warner Bros. While the romance is a bit sappy, the real star of the show is Italy, which makes the film a great partner to this delicious and aromatic Soave from the northeast. Grab someone you love and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and tastes of a most romantic country.

THE WINE

Monte Calvarina is a serious Soave exclusive from Italy’s stunning 2015 vintage and the critically acclaimed Antonio Fattori. As you’ll taste, it is positively bursting with complex, ripe fruit character and that trademark mineral edge you’ll find in all top-shelf Soaves. Antonio took great care when selecting the grapes, heading to a special vineyard on the steep slopes of Monte Calvarina (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). There, he hand harvested primo Garganega grapes – tricky work at such a precipitous angle, but well worth the effort. Back in the cellar, lees and oak aging imparted a rich texture and further complexity.

THE REGION

Soave is one of Italy’s top whites, and it “deserves the kind of acclaim white Burgundy gets,” writes top critic and Master of Wine Jancis Robinson. And as Wine Spectator notes, the region’s “mix of Alpine and Mediterranean [climates], with warm days and cool nights, produces wine that can be simultaneously rich and fresh – an easy-drinker that also brings some heft to the table.”

THE WINEMAKER

“Antonio Fattori is one of the most talented white winemakers in the Veneto. ... his white Soave expressions are the true standouts. ... The red soils of the aptly named Terrossa di Ronca subzone produce ethereal and elegant white wines that are powerfully distinguished by their chiseled mineral notes. Fattori’s wines embrace this quality perfectly,” (The Wine Advocate).

WITH FOOD

Speaking of tables, Soave makes a perfect match for grilled fish or seafood pasta dishes. But if seafood isn’t your thing, classic chicken kiev would be a tasty pick. In fact, a variety of chicken dishes would be delectable – even chicken salad if it’s lunchtime. Antipasto with Soave is another classic match, along with mozzarella and tomato salad.
