Morin Père & Fils Chardonnay 2016
Pays d’Oc IGP, France

The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

Ernst Lubitsch’s romantic story of mistaken identities has been remade several times, but none match the sweetness and charm of the original. Pour a glass of this crisp and traditionally made French Chardonnay and enjoy the ups and downs of Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan’s loveable couple.

THE WINE

Here’s a ripe, citrus-packed Chardonnay from the House of Morin Père et Fils, who have been making fine, highly sought-after Burgundy since 1822. For this specialrelease white, the family headed south to the famed Hérault district near France’s Mediterranean coast. One taste and you’ll be glad they did. Crafted in the traditional Burgundian method, this is a real treat in the glass, delivering melon, peaches, and crisp apple flavor, along with delicate vanilla notes.

THE GRAPE

Chardonnay performs most majestically (and expensively) in the vineyards of Burgundy’s Chablis and Côte d’Or – but it also thrives in southern France. Depending on the site (and the ambitions of the winemaker), it can be rich and buttery or refreshing and citrusy. In addition to being a multifaceted grape, it also has many regional French synonyms like Aubaine, Beaunois, and Chaudenay. Dinner party fact: Melon à Queue Rouge is a rare mutation of the grape that has a red stem.

THE REGION

VY_France_Midi_LanguedocThe Languedoc, the 120-mile vineyard swath along the Mediterranean just over the Pyrénées from Spain, is a land of extremes. Punctuating the rugged, windswept landscape are ancient, low-yielding vines that produce intensely concentrated flavors, and the brushy garrigue (wild herb) topography imparts trademark notes of rosemary, thyme, lavender, and more to the wines.

WITH FOOD

veg_israelicouscousChardonnay crafted in this lightly oaked style always makes for a great aperitif – hand guests a glass as they arrive for dinner. Wondering what to serve? Try a fresh salad of grilled veggies and Israeli couscous, topped with crumbled goat cheese, fresh herbs, and the best olive oil you can find. Chill the dish for 40 minutes to an hour in the fridge, then serve.
