Starring Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr as a British hunter and wife of a missing explorer, the film follows the pair as they journey in search of the legendary diamond mines of the title. Shot on location in East Africa, it’s a stunning entertainment and the perfect pair for a wine full of attractive ripeness and fruit-forward depth.

THE WINE

Sangiovese is the major grape variety of Tuscany’s famed Chianti. However, for top value, head next door to lesserknown Rubicone (part of the famed Emilia-Romagna region). It’s home to excellent quality Sangiovese, made in a slightly more fruity style. Full of spicy cherry flavor, this delightful discovery puts many far pricier Chiantis to shame. No surprise when you consider that Celita (below) and Fabio Ravaioli’s small estate has won ‘Tre Bicchieri’ (three glasses), the highest honor from Gambero Rosso, Italy’s most celebrated wine guide.

THE REGION

Rubicone lies just across the Apennines from Tuscany in the Romagna hills, with views stretching to the Adriatic Sea. Encompassing Forli, Ravenna, and Rimini, it takes its name from the river Julius Caesar famously crossed in 49 BC to challenge Rome’s authority. It only became an IGT (Indicazione Geografia Tipica) in 1995, but its reputation for quality and value has grown rapidly, thanks to small, quality-focused families like the Ravaiolis.
