Picco Attila Merlot Refosco 2014
Delle Venezie IGP, Italy

A Letter to Three Wives (1949)
Currently Not Schedule

Writer-director Joseph Mankiewicz brings together several great actresses – and a young Kirk Douglas – for A Letter to Three Wives, a combination mystery and melodrama. The movie explores the married lives of three women who discover that one of their husbands has been having an affair. Like this red blend, the film is unusually structured for a 1940s Hollywood drama, but also totally captivating, fresh and delightful, with just a touch of bitterness.

THE WINE

Take a trip to mountainous northeastern Italy with this exciting red discovery from Alessandro Gallici. It's an unusual blend of Merlot and Refosco (the region's star red grape), grown in the vineyards between the Giulie Alps and the fertile lagoons north of the Adriatic Sea. This area was once a strategic stronghold for Atilla the Hun (see back label for the full story), but today is gaining an army of devotees for its vibrant reds. Aged in traditional oak barrels for five months, Picco Attila is filled with dark fruit and warming spice flavor, balanced by a seriously fresh edge.

THE WINEMAKER

winemaker-2Alessandro Gallici is one of northern Italy’s top white wine specialists (he's so well respected among his peers that he's a welcome guest in vineyards like legendary Livio Felluga). But Alessandro also loves experimenting with red winemaking – especially if it involves the region's rare red grapes, like Refosco. (And, when he's not hunting around world-class vineyards, Alessando can be found riding his vintage motorcycle.)

THE APPELLATION

The ‘Venezie’ you see on the label is not a reference to the famed city of canals, but rather to the 'Tre Venezie,' a group of like-named political regions that existed between the mid-1800s and the early 20th century (known today as Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige). The less-strict winemaking laws of Delle Venezie allow winemakers more creativity in the winery.

WITH FOOD

Alessandro likes to serve his Merlot-Refosco blend with rich game dishes like peppery venison steaks. He also really loves it with a plate of creamy polenta con zucca (polenta with pumpkin puree). Other tasty options include fresh tagliatelle with duck ragù, beef bourguignon, or moussaka, the classic Greek dish of potatoes or eggplant with ground meat and spices.
