RedHeads Barrel Monkeys Shiraz 2018
McLaren Vale, Australia

Atlantic City (1981)
Currently not available, for more info visit TCM Website

Pioneering winemakers developed this Shiraz with love and passion for their craft. So too did independent filmmaker Louis Malle – a French director who had only recently begun to shoot films in America – make this offbeat thriller about an aging gangster (Burt Lancaster) who falls in love with a gambling house waitress (Susan Sarandon). This unique movie became a critics darling upon its release and stands as a late career triumph for veteran star Lancaster.

THE STUDIO

Welcome to the RedHeads Studio, in the heart of Australia’s Barossa Valley. This tiny boutique was set up over 10 years ago by some of the country’s hottest winemaking talents (guys with day jobs at Australia’s largest wine corporations). They were convinced the wine could be better – if only they didn’t have to make 40,000 cases to please shareholders. The studio was a chance to moonlight, to craft the kind of wines they were really passionate about. That means tiny batches, an everything-done-byhand approach and wines that burst with true Australian character.

They’re leading the charge in the new Australian wine revolution – demonstrating to all who taste their creations that Australian wine is about heart and soul (not bland, over-produced ‘critter’ wines). And the critics are raving. “Not formulaic potions ... obviously made with care and passion,” writes Jancis Robinson, MW. After The Wine Advocate tasted one of their Cabernets, they wrote: “If it said Napa Valley on the label, you could multiply the price times six.”

THE WINE

WI_Australia_RedHeads_nightEvery winemaker starts out as a ‘barrel monkey,’ dragging hoses, clambering over barrel stacks, and scrubbing tanks. Barrel Monkeys celebrates the pioneering crew who have honed their talents at RedHeads. Crafted with premium parcels of Shiraz from Australia’s McLaren Vale region and aged in American oak, it boasts 91 points from Bob Campbell, MW, and rich dark fruit and vanilla notes.

WITH FOOD

lamp_chopsFans of luscious, full-bodied reds will enjoy sipping this boutique Australian Shiraz on its own. At meal time, pair it alongside hearty meats like thick-cut steak with duck-fat fried potatoes, grilled lamb chops seasoned with garlic and rosemary, or juicy burgers with your favorite toppings. The RedHeads team also loves serving it with a paprika, tomato, and butter bean stew.
