Summersday Viognier Chenin Blanc 2015
Lodi, California

It Happened One Night (1934)
TUESDAY, MAY 2 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

Settle in with a glass of this enchanting white blend and one of Hollywood's most delightful comedies. It Happened One Night is a showcase for two great actors (Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert) and the launching point for director Frank Capra's enduring popularity. This pairing should be enjoyed with good friends on a warm summer's day – or any time of year!

THE WINE

"Fresh as a daisy!" raved our California expert, Clare, on first sip of this luscious Viognier-Chenin Blanc. With its pretty label, lovely floral notes and ripe yellow fruit flavors, Summersday lives up to its sunny name. But it’s more than just a pretty face – Summersday is crafted with premium fruit from a top winery famous for their Viognier-Chenin Blanc. In fact, respected critic Robert Parker has awarded 90 Points to five of their last six vintages! One taste of this succulent exclusive and you'll understand why.

THE GRAPES

Viognier makes some of the world's most opulent whites. Only 25 years ago, after being torn up in favor of more 'fashionable' varieties, Viognier was down to just a few acres of vineyards in its home, France’s northern Rhône Valley. Happily, it's enjoying a worldwide resurgence in popularity, as wine lovers everywhere embrace its heady apricot/honeysuckle character. In Summersday, those flavors are balanced by a splash of Chenin Blanc (5 percent), which adds crisp, mouthwatering citrus notes.

THE REGION

As Master of Wine Jancis Robinson says, "Lodi is a seriously interesting location for growing grapes." Wine Enthusiast agrees – they named it the 2015 Region of the Year. Like Napa Valley, Lodi's warm summer climate is tempered by occasional morning fog. While it's better known for rich reds like Zinfandel, Lodi can also produce top Viognier with a ripe, orchard fruit character.

WITH FOOD

With its fruity and floral character, Summersday will make a tasty match for mild Asian fare. Our favorites include chicken curry, pineapple fried rice and tempura-fried vegetables. Seafood is another great pairing – especially fresh white fish or smoked salmon with a squeeze of lemon. It's also a perfect wine for a picnic. Sip it solo, or with summer berries and soft cheeses.
