TCM Backlot Red Blend 2017
California

Sullivan’s Travels (1941)
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

The votes are in, and perennial fan favorite Joel McCrea has been granted a full day of programming by TCM Backlot members! In perhaps his most cherished film, writer-director Preston Sturges cast McCrea as a filmmaker who goes undercover to experience the miseries of America’s poorest citizens for an upcoming project. He gets pulled in much deeper than he anticipates, though, and the result is a portrait of artistry and social responsibility that speaks to the Hollywood films that TCM audiences have loved for generations.

THE WINE

As the official fan club of Turner Classic Movies, the mission of TCM Backlot is to bring you behind the scenes of Hollywood filmmaking. With a nod towards the broad world of studios, film artists, and movie stars, we’ve commissioned a smooth, fruit-forward red that’s bursting with a cast of characters from across the Golden State (see the grape varieties below). With complex layers of red cherry, boysenberry, black currant, and subtle spice flavors, it’s a delicious tribute to our extended TCM family.

THE GRAPES

This unique red blend boasts an all-star cast of leading grape varieties. Merlot constitutes the biggest portion of the recipe (30%) and imparts the velvety-smooth texture that makes TCM Backlot so easy to enjoy. Cabernet Sauvignon (27%) adds structure and black currant notes, while Dornfelder (a major player in Germany, 13%) and Zinfandel (12%) give dark berry flavors. There are also splashes of Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, and Syrah, which bring deep color and subtle spice characters.

THE VINTAGE

VY_California_sunriseThe good news keeps on coming for fans of California wine. Following a string of fantastic years from 2012 to 2016, the Golden State had another great harvest in 2017. After years of drought, the vines were replenished by much-needed winter rains before enjoying a long, hot summer that ripened the fruit to perfection. Wine Enthusiast says it best: “California’s 2017 vintage is excellent.”

WITH FOOD

bbq_braisedbeefshortribsWith its ripe berry flavors and subtle spice notes, this TCM exclusive will shine alongside barbecue. Pair it with braised beef short ribs, grilled lamb chops, or juicy burgers with all the fixings.
