The Gooseberry Bush 2017
Robertson WO, South Africa

Lost Horizon (1937)
Currently Not Scheduled Available At TCM Website

Shangri-La may be the stuff of dreams, but its joys can be experienced in both this wine – produced in an idyllic setting between mountain ranges – and in Frank Capra’s adaptation of Lost Horizon. Savor this vibrant white blend with enticing fruity aromas while getting swept up in an enchanting romantic fantasy, set high in the Himalayas.

THE WINE

There’s no better introduction to the lush vineyards of the Western Cape than a cool glass of Gooseberry Bush from Bon Courage estate. This refreshing sipper regularly wins awards at top shows, including the South African Terroir Wine Awards, where it has claimed a Best White Blend trophy. A classic South African combination of crisp Colombard and citrus-filled Sauvignon Blanc, it offers enticing aromas of fresh-picked gooseberry and grapefruit, which introduce a burst of pineapple and lime on the palate.

THE REGION

Bon Courage is a leading estate in the worldclass Robertson district. The vineyards are nestled between the majestic Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountain ranges in the heart of the Western Cape. Long, sunny days ensure that grapes ripen fully, while cool, southeasterly breezes from the Indian Ocean and chilly, misty nights encourage the development (and preservation) of the zingy aromatic character that marks both Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard.

THE REGION

VY_SouthAfrica_Robertson_The original homestead was built in 1818. In 1927, it was auctioned by the Dutch Reformed Church and bought by Willie Bruwer, who planted the first vineyards. Willie’s youngest son André took over in 1965. In 1990, André was joined by his talented son, Jacques, who has gone on to win international medals (like a coveted silver at Mundus Vini for a previous vintage of Gooseberry Bush).

WITH FOOD

fish_fishandchipsGooseberry Bush has a zippy, mouthwatering acidity and full-fruited flavors that will pair up beautifully with all kinds of fish or chicken dishes. At Bon Courage’s popular restaurant, Café Maude, they’d likely serve it with fresh, deep-fried hake (think: fish and chips), their version of chicken schnitzel, or a bacon-avocado wrap with sunflower seeds and honey.
