Mendocino County, California

Special Bonus Wine

This dark, spicy and bramble-packed red has real backbone, just like the indomitable heroes of the Old West. Match this Zinfandel, a varietal brought to California by way of Italy, with an epic “spaghetti” Western from the 1960s. Though shot outside Rome, these films came to define the American West for a new generation of audiences.

THE GRAPE

Zinfandel is California’s third mostplanted grape (behind Cabernet and Pinot Noir) – yet it’s regarded by many as the state’s signature red. Originally from Croatia (where it's called ‘Tribidrag’), this variety found its way to sunny Puglia in Italy (where they call it Primitivo), then later to the Golden State as Italians immigrated here. Regardless of provenance or name, Zinfandel is famously food-friendly.

THE REGION

Mendocino is one of California’s largest, most climatically diverse counties. While vines have been growing here since the late 1800s, modern winemaking was really introduced back in the mid-1960s (when it was also a haven for ‘flower children’). The climate is relatively cool, with morning fog and afternoon sea breezes.

WITH FOOD

Overflowing with dark fruit flavors and hints of cracked black pepper (classic Zinfandel
hallmarks), True Grit is particularly delicious served with saucy, meaty barbecue like smoked beef ribs or a char-grilled steak. Also a great pick: hearty Italian dishes, from simple, spicy tomato pasta to veal Parm. And it’s definitely smooth enough to enjoy solo.
