Christian Moueix ‘Private Reserve’ 2010
Bordeaux AOC, France

Doctor Zhivago (1965)
MONDAY, JULY 17 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

Based on a best-selling book by a Nobel Prize-winning author, and the follow-up to director David Lean’s monumental Lawrence of Arabia, few films in Hollywood history carried the pedigree of Doctor Zhivago (1965). Celebrated for its sumptuous color cinematography and the romance between Omar Sharif’s Zhivago and Julie Christie’s Lara, this award-winning epic is perfect for such a complex and colorful release from expert winemaker Christian Moueix.

For 38 years, Christian Moueix (pictured below) was at the helm of Pétrus – perhaps the most sought-after Bordeaux of all. At $3,000-plus a bottle, it’s certainly the priciest. And thanks to our long friendship with the Moueix family, you’re invited to enjoy Christian’s ‘Private Reserve’ from 2010, a vintage that was rated 98 Points by Wine Spectator. This is just the kind of complex, impressive find we seek out for our best customers (like you!). And it shows why Bordeaux is still the world’s most famous region for reds.

BordeauxBordeaux makes around one in eight bottles of French wine, including some of the world’s most celebrated, cellar-worthy reds. The word ‘Bordeaux’ is derivative of au bord de l’eau, meaning ‘along the waters.’ On the Right Bank of the Dordogne, the reds tend to be crafted around Merlot, while the Left Bank focuses on Cabernet. Christian’s delicious Right Bank cuvée is Merlot-rich with a dash of Cab.

Bordeaux fans have never had it so good. Following the landmark 2009 vintage, 2010 set new records for richness and color. As Decanter’s Bordeaux expert Steven Spurrier said, “comparisons are made with previous years and at this level of quality, there are few contenders.” With all the hype surrounding these sought-after wines, and with collectors squirreling away what they can, securing the best is becoming somewhat of a challenge. But that’s the beauty of having friends in all the right places.

FOODLike all young, top-notch Bordeaux, we recommend you decant Christian’s ‘Private Reserve’ for at least 30 minutes before serving (it will really help develop the aromas and flavors). Then, enjoy it with its classic matches: roasted rack of lamb or beef tenderloin. It will also be delicious alongside firm cheeses, or with a crusty baguette and some duck or pork pâté.
