If our white wine doesn’t take you to heaven by itself, this movie will surely do the trick. Later remade by Warren Beatty as Heaven Can Wait, this original version stars Robert Montgomery as a boxer who is taken to the afterlife a bit prematurely by his guardian angel. As a make-good, they send him back to earth – in the body of a recently-murdered millionaire. Devoid of saccharine or oversentimental storytelling, the film – like this vibrant wine – is pure entertainment.

Top critic Robert Parker is a longtime devotee of Cuvée du Vatican (theirs was the first case of Châteauneuf he ever bought) and says proprietor Jean-Marc Diffonty (below) “has been doing a fabulous job here for over a decade.” Our customers love their powerful reds, so we’re thrilled to bring you this exclusive white. Crafted with star Rhône grapes (Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne, and Clairette) grown during the stellar 2018 vintage, Réserve de l’Abbé brims with nectarine, honeysuckle, and spice.

The Diffonty clan have been a byword for superior quality in Châteauneuf since 1673, as vine and olive tree cultivators. They began making and selling wines in 1900, and in 1924 founded Le Syndicat de Châteauneuf-du-Pape – an organization still in operation today. Their gnarled, old vines produce wines that are so heavenly, even Pope John XXIII was taken by them (he blessed Cuvée du Vatican back in 1958, and to this day, a case of the estate’s wine is sent to Rome every year).

WM_JeanMarcDiffontyThis special Réserve hails from near Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the southern Rhône’s most famous appellation. While this storied region is best known for its reds, we also love its distinctive whites. Like the reds, a majority of these wines are blends that are rich in texture, with intense fruit flavors and aromatics. Jean-Marc knows just how to draw out the best from the grapes he uses – as you’ll taste.

chee_GoatCheeseandFigTarteWith its vibrant aromas and lush, orchard-fruit-driven palate, this exclusive Réserve deserves an equally lovely food pairing. We recommend scallop gratin with Gruyère cheese and scallions, but it’ll be delicious with most shellfish dishes. Vegetarian? Go for a vegetable quiche (we like ones that feature spinach and mushrooms) or simple pasta primavera.
