Diego de Almagro Reserva 2014
Valdepeñas DO, Spain

Red River (1948)

To open a bottle of this vibrant Spanish red is to be transported to a wind-swept, sun-scorched land – like that of Howard Hawks’ classic Western. A beautifully crafted film, it tells the story of a cattle driver (John Wayne) who braves the Chisholm Trail with the survivor of an Indian raid (Montgomery Clift). This is the film that made a major star of young Clift, who introduced “method” acting to the movies with his naturalistic performance. But it’s Wayne that commands the screen, effortlessly portraying a rugged Western hero.

Spain specializes in patiently aged, beautifully mellow reds, and Diego de Almagro is a fine example. It sports a history of gold-medal acclaim, and we can’t wait to see which awards the 2014 release wins. After hand-harvesting the ripest parcels of Tempranillo, winemaker Antolín González took the grapes back to the cellar at the acclaimed Félix Solís estate. There, he treated the wine to 12 months in top-notch oak barrels (with further time in bottle before release). The resulting Reserva brims with vibrant, redberry flavor, plus smooth vanilla and toasty spice notes.

Félix Solís Fernández founded his winery in 1952. Today, the third generation is at the helm – with help from talented head winemaker Antolín González – and the results speak for themselves. Félix Solís has won major accolades, like Best Producer in Spain (Berliner Wine Trophy) and Spanish Producer of the Year (AWC Vienna). They were also ranked No. 6 in The World Ranking of Wines and Spirits’s list of the top 100 Best Wineries of the World.

VY_Spain_bushvine_nogreenWelcome to la meseta, south central Spain’s wind-swept, sun-scorched plateau – home to the Valdepeñas and La Mancha districts. Meaning ‘valley of stones,’ Valdepeñas has stony soils, intense sunshine, and cold night temperatures. These dramatic conditions force vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, resulting in Tempranillo grapes with seriously intense aromas and flavors.

lamb_roast_lamb_and_potatoesThis mellow Reserva will shine alongside Spanish-inspired dishes. We suggest pairing it with cordero asado (roasted lamb) or traditional paella (saffron-flavored rice with shrimp, chicken, and spicy chorizo sausage). It’s also an impressive centerpiece for a tapas party. Try albóndigas (meatballs), silky jamón serrano, olives, firm cheeses, and more.
