Fattoria Lornano ‘Le Macchie’ 2013
Chianti Classico DOCG, Italy

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

One of Woody Allen’s most thoughtful and celebrated films, this story of three sisters and their romantic entanglements delicately balances pathos and humor (and won several Oscars, including one for its screenplay). It’s perfect with a glass of this bright Italian red, with generous cherry notes and hints of pepper and smooth tannins.

Chianti is Tuscany’s best-known red – and savvy Italian wine fans know that the finest hail from the Chianti Classico wine zone (and come with its famous mark of quality, the black rooster, on the bottle neck). This outstanding example was crafted by legendary winemaker Franco Bernabei and named for the finest single vineyard (‘Le Macchie,’ below) at the 100-year-old Lornano estate. It boasts a long history of acclaim – including 97 points from Italy’s No. 1 critic, Luca Maroni, for this impressive 2013 release. You’re in for layers of ripe cherry, subtle violet, and peppery spice.

Owned by the Taddei family since 1904, Fattoria Lornano lies in the hills of Castellina, in the heart of the Classico region. The family are founding members of the Consorzio del Chianti Classico, the organization that has protected and promoted quality since 1924. Known as ‘Mr. Sangiovese’ among his peers, superstar Franco Bernabei makes some of Tuscany’s most iconic reds (his Fontodi Flaccianello sells for $100-plus a bottle).

VY_Italy_LeMacchie_vinesblueskyChianti Classico is the warmest, sunniest part of the Chianti region, where the premium vineyards produce nuanced, age-worthy wines (the gems from the hills of Castellina are particularly famous for their delicate aromas and flavors). Quality hit a new high during the stellar 2013 vintage, which Wine Spectator rated 91 points for its “vibrant wines with bright, focused fruit flavors.”

ital_ossobucoThis special, single-vineyard Chianti Classico is ideal for sipping with hearty roast game or classic osso buco. Meat-stuffed pastas with a rich marinara sauce or grilled lamb chops with rosemary and thyme are also winning matches. Vegetarian?
