This Italian white is elegant and crisp, so pair it with an elegant team of performers: the timeless Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren. Both actors are dressed down from their more famous and more glamorous roles here – they portray lonely neighbors who form a mutual attachment, set on the historic day in 1940 when Fascist leaders met in Rome. Journey to Italy with this captivating Falanghina and a remarkable Italian film.

With its perfumed aromas and refreshing floralmineral characters, southern Italy’s native Falanghina “is one of those grapes that came out of nowhere to an almost sudden stardom,” says top wine writer Jon Bonné. And who better to give you a taste than Feudi di San Gregorio, Campania’s preeminent estate and a champion of the region’s stunning local grapes. They boast a long history of 90+ point scores from the likes of The Wine Advocate and renowned critic James Suckling – and their elegant Falanghina is certain to earn them even more acclaim. Serve it as a refreshing aperitivo or alongside simply cooked fish or crisp salads.

As you pour for guests, be sure to point out Feudi del Vulcano’s beautiful label. The mosaic design was inspired by the ancient mosaic tiles found near Mount Vesuvius. When its famous eruption buried Pompeii, most of the city’s artwork was lost. However, archaeologists have since recovered many mosaic designs – perfectly preserved under the volcanic rock – like this one.

VY_Italy_Campania_mtnCampania’s wine industry has grown enormously recently. “Many of the best Italian whites are made from grapes that were virtually unknown 25 years ago, like three from Campania: Greco, Fiano, and Falanghina” (The New York Times). Due to difficult growing conditions on its steep slopes, and the intense flavors of the wines, Campania is famed as one of Italy’s most highly prized, expensive regions.

fish_whitefish_lemonFalanghina makes a refreshing aperitivo and is the perfect wine to serve Pinot Grigio fans (it’ll show them what else Italy has to offer in the mouthwatering whites category!). At meal time, go for simple fish dishes like baked tilapia with a squeeze of lemon. This will also be tasty with summer salads topped with crumbled cheese, almonds, and a citrus vinaigrette dressing.
