Inside Track ‘Limited Release’ Semillon 2017
Napa Valley, California

A Hard Day’s Night (1964)
SATURDAY, JUNE 27 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

Rich, expressive, and a little bit nutty, this Semillon is sure to leave you wanting more; just like the crazed Beatles fans in director Richard Lester’s film favorite of the Fab Four. Shot in black and white, this classic earned Academy Award nominations for writer, Alun Owen, and record producer, George Martin. Savor this unique moment in history with this equally appealing varietal.

THE WINE

Our California expert, Clare Tooley, has connections all across the storied Napa Valley – so she has the “Inside Track” to exceptional parcels of wine. For example, this ‘Limited Release’ Semillon hails from a highly acclaimed estate in Napa’s premium Rutherford district. Since Clare has worked with them for years, they gave her a friends-only price on their fine Semillon – in exchange for complete anonymity (their regular customers pay much more than you). You’re in for textbook Semillon: supremely elegant and creamy, with complex floral/nutty aromas and rich, dried-fruit flavor.

THE GRAPE

In its spiritual home of France, Semillon is the third most-planted white wine grape, behind Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Though best known for starring in Sauternes (Bordeaux’s famous sweet wine), it also features in dry white Bordeaux. Semillon thrives in California too, where it produces vibrant whites with ripe, yellow-fruit notes. Though often blended with Sauvignon Blanc, in this wine, Semillon stands on its own.

THE REGION

VY_California_Napa_SageCanyonRanchSomething about the words “Napa Valley” on a wine label sets pulses racing. The region may be small (it’s just 30 miles long and three miles wide), but it’s considered by many to be the biggest jewel in California’s winemaking crown. It boasts a maritime climate – warm days and cool nights, with fairly regular fog rolling in from the San Pablo Bay. Ideal for Semillon and other lovely whites.

WITH FOOD

stew_inpumpkin_closeup_fallWith its complex flavors and creamy texture, this fine Napa Semillon has the weight to stand up to heartier dishes. Serve it with grilled chicken or roasted turkey topped with a garlic-cream sauce. It will also pair well with richer seafood (buttery lobster, scallops, and more). For a tasty vegetarian match, try butternut squash ravioli, pumpkin soup, and other creamy dishes.
