The Harvey Girls (1946)
SUNDAY, AUGUST 19 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

Judy Garland could arguably be called the greatest talent in American musicals. Her charm and confidence as a performer is on full display here in the role of a western waitress in The Harvey Girls. The film includes at least one iconic musical number, “On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe”, which like many of Garland’s film tunes became an instant hit. Enjoy her timeless appeal with this remarkable Riesling, one of the world’s most beloved white grapes.

Germany has always been the top destination for world-class Riesling, like this stunning discovery from the country’s Rheinhessen region. It was crafted at the renowned Karl May estate with top-notch, estate-grown grapes (indicated by the word Gutswein on the label) in a dry style (Trocken). With its ripe, citrusand orchard-fruit character, it has the fruit vibrancy to stand up to spicy dishes – see over for our favorite pairings.

Founded in 1815, the Karl May estate lies near the Rhine River in the premium Rheinhessen district. Today, seventh-generation brothers Peter and Fritz May are at the helm. They both studied oenology at university, and have worked at some of the world’s top wineries (Peter at Framingham in New Zealand, and Fritz at Riesling specialist Grosset in Australia and at Presinger in Austria). Since 2007, they’ve focused on revitalizing the estate with eco-friendly winemaking methods in the vineyards and cellar. The results, as you’ll taste, have been phenomenal.

VY_Germany_Harvest_RhineRiesling rivals Chardonnay for the crown of THE greatest white grape. Rarely oaked, it can be sweet or dry from Germany and Alsace, while Australia’s Clare and Eden Valleys produce gloriously steely, lime-fresh examples. Many can live for decades. Common flavors include apples, flowers, and lemons – and many top examples famously develop classic aromas of petrol/gas after years in the bottle.

latin_chickenfajitas“The word is out about Riesling: its bright, zingy flavors are an ideal match for food, especially Asian cuisine,” says Food & Wine. Try spicy Thai noodles and curries or fresh sushi with a dollop of wasabi. Spicy fish tacos are a Latininspired dish that will also be delicious. Or go local, and try hearty German sausages with spätzle (dumplings with gravy).
