La Catina Estate Chardonnay 2017
Dealurile Munteniei, Romania

Charade (1963)

Two of Hollywood’s most beloved actors shine in this Stanley Donen-directed thriller. Surprisingly, it was the first time Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant had appeared together onscreen – Grant had declined to costar as her love interest in previous films because of their considerable age difference. In Charade, this point was playfully written into the dialogue – it’s just one of the many charming elements of an immensely satisfying film. Enjoy it while sipping this creamy and complex wine, made from the most popular of white grapes.

Our intrepid expert, Beth Willard (the International Wine Challenge 2015 Eastern Europe Specialist of the Year), is passionate about Romania’s wines – and she’s very excited for you to try her latest find. She uncovered this limited-release, barrelfermented Chardonnay at a renowned estate that has supplied wine to the Romanian Royal Court of King Michael. Crafted with handharvested grapes from the estate’s best vineyards, La Catina brims with vibrant peach, apricot, tropical fruit, and spice characters.

Romania is home to “some of Europe’s greatest cool climate vineyards,” says wine writer Hugh Johnson. And the Dealurile Munteniei region is an ideal spot for growing Chardonnay. It lies on a similar latitude to famous Chardonnay haven, Burgundy, where similarly chilly temperatures impart aromatic intensity and a mouthwatering lift to the palate. Thanks to the barrel fermentation, this gem is richer than its French counterparts, showing the lush, full-fruited charm you’d find in examples from the Napa Valley.

GI_grapes_chardonnayChardonnay is one of the world’s most popular white grapes. Its ability to adapt to different climates and soils makes it an appealing variety for winemakers to experiment with. The bestknown (and most expensive) versions come from France’s Burgundy region. However, great-value Chardonnay can also be found in Romania, California, and other top winemaking countries.

turk_turkeyonplatterAlong with the barrel fermentation, this lovely Chardonnay was aged on its lees for added creamy complexity. This character makes it a luxurious aperitif. At meal time, it’s a delicious partner for savory white meats, from oven-roasted turkey with all the trimmings to grilled chicken breasts. You could also enjoy it with creamy pasta dishes or a cheese plate and good company.
