Late Arrival Barbera 2018
North Coast, California

A Matter of Life and Death (1947)
SATURDAY, JUNE 20 @ 08:00 PM (ET)

This wartime tale of love and second chances is often ranked among the best British films ever made. The must-see story of a late arrival, it stars David Niven as a Royal Air Force pilot who is shot down in combat but given a second chance at life when his guardian angel fails to escort him to heaven in a timely manner. A rich and fulfilling story that goes so nicely with this bright and lively varietal.

Late Arrival hails from the premium North Coast, a region that encompasses the counties of Napa, Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino. The name comes from how the grapes grow: in the warm California sunshine, Barbera enjoys a longer ripening season, which tempers its naturally high acidity and allows the fruit to develop serious concentration. As such, Barbera grapes are often harvested later in the season and are a “late arrival” to the winery. But their intense flavors make them well worth the wait. Thanks to the warm 2018 vintage, you can look forward to a succulent palate with ripe, dark-fruit flavors and that trademark freshness.

The North Coast is where you’ll find some of California’s most famous vineyards (and, some of the world’s most sought-after wines). One hundred miles long and 50 miles wide, the region was formed by colliding tectonic plates, volcanic activity, and changes in sea level. The resulting, diverse soil types are ideal for grape growing.

VY_California_NicholsonVyrdsEven with all the advancements in DNA profiling, Barbera’s origins are still shrouded in mystery. Enigmatic backstory aside, “Barbera has plenty of qualities that would seem to make it a likely household name: fairly soft tannins, an ability to age well, and bright, lively acidity. Thanks to its versatile nature, it is also one of the easiest wines in the world to pair with food,” writes The Wall Street Journal.

stew_ossobucco_inpotWith its zingy acidity – even in this luscious California example – Barbera is a wine that really comes into its own with a meal. Tomatobased pasta dishes are a classic match; braised beef short ribs, osso buco, or rich vegetarian casseroles will be other hearty and delicious options. Roasted pork chops with stuffing or even Chinese takeout are more delectable choices.
