Movie & Wine Pairing

Les Hauts de Cairanne 2013
Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC, France

Rio Bravo (1959)

With its variety of grapes in every bottle, the southern Rhone is a veritable ‘Wild West’ of wine regions. This satisfying red blend is perfect for a highly entertaining Western like Rio Bravo, which not only features the iconic John Wayne, but singers Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson as well. Enjoy a glass of this spicy and earthy wine with Howard Hawks’ vivid Technicolor Western.

As savvy wine drinkers know, ‘Côtes-du-Rhône Villages’ on the label is a sign of first-rate quality in the bottle. For her gold-medal winning 2013 ( Concours des Vins d’Orange 2014), local star Audrey Françon-Formosa hand-selected a premium blend of 60% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre from premium mountainside plots just north of Vaucluse, near the famous L’Enclave des Papes (‘The Enclave of the Popes’) area. Grenache lends plump, red fruit, while Syrah introduces spicy black fruit and the splash of Mourvèdre adds structure and earthy notes.

Syrah and Grenache are the two great red grapes of the southern Rhône (they famously star in the pricey reds of Châteauneuf-du- Pape). Known for yielding a velvety character and ripe cherry flavors, Grenache adds weight and juicy red fruit notes to Rhône reds. Syrah introduces a sought-after dark berry character with a savory, peppery edge. Together, they make complex, age-worthy wines.

The Rhône Valley is comprised of two distinct zones. The cooler north is known for peppery Syrah grown on very steep slopes. As the Rhône River winds its way south toward the Mediterranean, things get much warmer. Wines have been made here for centuries, and during the Middle Ages, the village of Cairanne traded hands from the Knights Templar to Pope Jean XXII, with the benefit to the latter said to have been ‘paid in wine.’

The Rhône is famous for more than its world-class wines. It's also a major gastronomic center, starring everything from gourmet saucisson (sausages) to chevreau a l’ail et herbes sauvages (baby goat with garlic and herbs). One of Audrey’s favorite local pairings is rouzole , a bacon and ham pancake that combines pork, eggs and bread crumbs in a casserole dish. Bon appétit!
