Paolo Valle Pinot Grigio 2018
Friuli Colli Orientali DOP, Italy

Some Like it Hot (1959)
SUNDAY, MAY 31 @ 05:45 PM (ET)

Although a Pinot Grigio is best served cool, it’s perfectly paired up with this hot comedy classic. Directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe, this film favorite about musicians incognito is as fresh today as it was in 1959. A great complement to this complex but tasty wine.

THE WINE

This Pinot Grigio comes from the renowned Valle estate – an exciting collaboration of the talented Paolo Valle and the equally remarkable Alessandro Gallici (maker of our wildly popular Visionario). In their hilly vineyards, not far from the centuries-old Rozzato Abbey, Paolo and Alessandro put quality over quantity, instituting a lower-density vine training setup than some of their neighbors. Beyond the mountain-freshness naturally imparted to the wines by the Alpine terroir, Paolo and Alessandro also chose to cool ferment the wine in stainless steel tanks – a means of preserving the refreshing, pure-fruited character that, decades ago, the Valle estate helped to pioneer in the region. And considering the stunning quality of Italy’s 2018 vintage, you’re in for something really special.

Look forward to a level of complexity that you only get in the very best Italian Pinot Grigios: delicate aromas of pear and peach, with a hint of almond. More orchard fruit unfolds on the palate, framed by well-balanced acidity and a crisp, refreshing texture.

THE REGION

GI_grapes_PinotGris_FLATPinot Grigio’s spiritual home is northeastern Italy – and “the Colli Orientali hills are home to some of Friuli’s most prestigious vineyards,” says wine-searcher.com. Vineyards in this tiny region (whose name means “eastern hills”) are sheltered from winds by the Julian Alps. It’s also cooler than other Friuli subzones, giving the wines an added zip that make them ideal for food or sipping solo.

WITH FOOD

This bona-fide crowd pleaser (and chic aperitif) will be outstanding with lightly grilled shellfish, sushi and sashimi, or a bowl of traditional northern Italian seafood risotto. It’s also excellent with a simple spread of creamy cheeses, dried fruits, nuts, and crostini, or any dish involving roasted white meats. It’s also a refreshing aperitif – serve well chilled and enjoy!
