Petit Zebra Chenin Blanc 2017
Western Cape WO, South Africa

Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
TUESDAY, JUNE 5 @ 11:45 PM (ET)

Like the Chenin Blanc grape, this Warner Bros. musical is often overshadowed by other Busby Berkeley efforts from the same year. And what a shame, because Gold Diggers has many pleasures on display, including its delightful cast led by stalwarts Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, Joan Blondell, and Ginger Rogers, as well as its terrific musical sequences. “We’re in the Money” is a standout, but the film hits its emotional core with “Remember My Forgotten Man,” a timely song that matches the beautiful depths of this fine white wine.

“It’s time to know Chenin Blanc, especially those from South Africa,” writes Wine Enthusiast. We agree – and we can’t wait for you to try Petit Zebra. This lovely Chenin Blanc is crafted by star winemaker Ben Jordaan (former talent at South Africa’s best-selling Kumala Wines). As you’ll see on the artful label, it honors Annie Rozier, a 19th-century flower merchant, who picked wildflowers from hills in special spots across the Western Cape. Nearly 200 years later, these very same hills are planted with vineyards – including the ones that produced Petit Zebra.

Crack open any wine book and you’ll find an ‘A’ list of varieties. In whites, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling are regarded among the ‘greatest,’ as there are very fine and famous examples. Chenin Blanc, however, is often overlooked – unfairly so, as it has produced incredible wine in France’s Loire Valley for centuries. More recently, it has risen to provenance the flagship white of South Africa, where it makes zesty, vibrant wines.

VY_SouthAfrica_vines_mtnsSouth Africa has the most beautiful vineyards of any region in the world – and her wines can be just as stunning. “The fine wines of South Africa deserve much more attention than they receive” ( Well, we’re paying attention – in the last decade or so, the number of premium, boutique estates has increased greatly, providing the enthusiast with even more territory to explore.

shell_grilled_shrimpWith its zingy citrus and ripe tropical flavors, Petit Zebra is exactly the kind of fun, easy-drinking white South Africans would tote along to a local braai (Afrikaans for barbecue). Enjoy as a mouthwatering aperitif, or serve alongside smoked salmon, grilled shrimp skewers, or other seafood dishes. It’s also a top choice for chilled tuna or chicken salads.
