Pair this blast of tropical fruit with Hollywood’s refreshing girl-next-door, Esther Williams, in one of her most iconic roles. Savor notes of tropical fruit and bright citrus while she swims to fame as real-life aquatic star Annette Kellerman, with dazzling sequences choreographed by the legendary Busby Berkeley that beautifully match this Sauvignon Blanc’s expressive aromas. Raise a glass to MGM’s Technicolor hit, invigorating and unforgettable.

Named for an iconic Nelson landmark, Rabbit Island is a classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Crafted at the family-owned Seifried Estate, the oldest winery on the South Island, it displays all the freshness of the exceptional 2016 vintage. Damaging earthquakes lowered yields, but the fruit that made it to harvest showed perfect ripeness, which translates to intensely concentrated flavors in your glass. Look forward to ripe tropical and citrus fruits, plus hints of minerality on the long, zippy finish.

Austrian-born Hermann Seifried immigrated to New Zealand as a young man. It was here he met his wife Agnes, and together they founded Seifried Estate in 1973. Today, Hermann’s son Chris is in charge of winemaking, and he’s keeping his parents’ dream alive with his award-winning Sauvignons (one scooped a coveted Regional Trophy at the 2016 International Wine Challenge). That’s Chris, Hermann, and our New Zealand expert, Dan Parrott, below at another local landmark, Split Apple Rock.

WM_ChrisSeifried_Tony_Dan_SplitRockWest of Malborough, the tiny region of Nelson is an ideal place to make wine. One reason why: it’s naturally protected by mountains to the east, south, and west, creating a ‘rain shadow’ that moderates temperature in the vineyards. At its best (as you’ll taste), “Nelson Sauvignon has a purity of fruit flavor and fine, edgy acidity that pushes it ahead of its large neighbor, Marlborough,” says Decanter

shell_greenlippedmussels_sauteedWith its ripe fruit character and thrilling freshness, Rabbit Island makes a mouthwatering aperitif. Pour guests a glass to sip alongside gourmet crackers and goat cheese (Sauvignon Blanc’s classic match). At meal time, this vibrant white will be delicious with crisp salads or fresh seafood. For a local match, try a plate of New Zealand’s famous green-lipped mussels.
