Austrian-born Hermann Seifried immigrated to New Zealand as a young man. It was here he met his wife Agnes, and together they founded Seifried Estate in 1973. Today, Hermann’s son Chris is in charge of winemaking, and he’s keeping his parents’ dream alive with his award-winning Sauvignons (one scooped a coveted Regional Trophy at the 2016 International Wine Challenge). One reason why: it’s naturally protected by mountains to the east, south, and west, creating a ‘rain shadow’ that moderates temperature in the vineyards. At its best (as you’ll taste), “Nelson Sauvignon has a purity of fruit flavor and fine, edgy acidity that pushes it ahead of its large neighbor, Marlborough,” says Decanter.
