Raymond Prodigal Collection Chardonnay 2012
North Coast, California

Love Me or Leave Me (1955)
TUESDAY, JULY 11 @ 01:45 PM (ET)

Doris Day and James Cagney star in the true story of torch singer Ruth Etting and the tough gangster who fostered her career. Usually cast as a girl-next-door type, Day dives into harder-edged material here, but her talent and radiance still shines through in this musical performance that matches beautifully with a delightful California Chardonnay.

Here’s a rich classic from Wine Enthusiast ’s 2012 American Winery of the Year and California’s exceptional 2012 vintage. Star winemaker Stephanie Putnam, who’s been at the helm of Hess and Far Niente, is known for her finesse with Cabernet Sauvignon – but she’s also got a magic touch with Chardonnay, as you’ll taste. Each cluster of grapes was pressed whole, to maximize purity of flavors. Two months in oak balances the crisp apple and pear flavors with a toasty nuance.

Roy Raymond’s career began at Beringer. He worked the first post-Prohibition vintage in 1933 and married into the family in 1936. After honing his skills at the famous winery for the next 35 years, he founded his eponymous estate in 1974. He quickly earned acclaim for his elegant wines with a beautiful balance of power and complexity. Under the leadership of Burgundy’s JeanCharles Boisset (below, with Stephanie), the family’s wines are reaching new and exciting levels of quality.

The North Coast encompasses the counties of Napa, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino – where you’ll find California’s most famous vineyards (and some of the world’s most sought-after Cabernet). One hundred miles long and 50 miles wide, the region was formed by colliding tectonic plates, volcanic activity and changes in sea level. The resulting, diverse soil types are ideal for grape growing.

Jean-Charles loves to experiment – particularly with food. Because of this wine’s foodfriendly nature, you can experiment with it yourself at home. Serve this ripe Chardonnay to guests with a plate of gougères (delicate French cheese puffs). It will also sing at dinner with classic roasted chicken (seasoned with citrus, rosemary and garlic), pork tenderloin or vegetarian casseroles.
