Movie & Wine Pairing

Sentiero dei Pini Pinot Grigio 2017
Venezie IGT, Italy

Woman of the Year (1942)

For this wine of palate-cleansing purity, start with the first of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy’s many films together with this wartime romantic comedy from director George Stevens. It’s an essential, with Hepburn’s steely intelligence pitted against Tracy’s flinty everyman, and it makes a perfect match to a crisp, charming, and well-balanced wine.

Northern Italy is Pinot Grigio’s spiritual home, and high-altitude Venezie produces some of the finest examples. This one’s made by Giuseppe Secchi, whose expert local knowledge led him to the very special vineyard for which this wine is named – a cone-shaped hill once home to a Roman temple that was approached by a spiral path lined with pine trees (shown below). The 2017 release impressed Gilbert & Gaillard judges, who awarded it a gold medal and called it “light, lively, and aromatic.”

With its palate-cleansing purity, a simple mention of ‘Pinot Grigio’ makes people thirsty. But they don’t all taste the same. This northern Italian gem is refreshing, minerally, and wellbalanced. The word grigio (‘gray’) refers to the grape’s color, which ranges from a blush pink to a pinkish-gray. So you may not be surprised to learn Pinot Grigio makes lovely rosato (rosé) wines too. In France’s Alsace region and the U.S.’s Pacific Coast, it is known as Pinot Gris and made in a richer, more opulent style.

VY_Italy_SentieroDeiPiniIf you were to drive toward Venice through the Dolomites, you’d see golden orchards on the valley floor and vineyards clinging to the high, sloping hillsides. Here, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Grigio ripen to mouthwatering perfection, thanks to the wide fluctuations in temperature from day to night. They produce an optimum balance of fruit flavor and fresh acidity ... as you’ll taste.

pizz_whitepizzaSentiero dei Pini’s racy mountain freshness and light, lively fruit flavor make it the perfect wine to sip with white meats, fresh fish, and vegetarian dishes – all the better if they offer a little Italian flair. Pairing suggestions include grilled lemon-basil calamari, chicken piccata, or white pizza with arugula, pear, and Gorgonzola. And of course, it will make a stylish aperitif.
