The Essentials Chardonnay 2014
Lodi, California

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
Not currently scheduled. Check TCM Schedule for more information

Smooth and mouthwatering, this sunny Chardonnay is as appealing as Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell’s single showgirls in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). Howard Hawks’ Technicolor musical gives the two stars a bouncy score including the classic “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” Monroe, the iconic blonde bombshell, is as timeless and irreplaceable as this most popular of white grapes.

The Essentials from Turner Classic Movies showcases landmark films that have had a lasting impact and this exclusive wine range will help you discover classic examples of the world’s star grapes. The first white release had to be Chardonnay – the international ‘Queen of Whites.’ Sourced from top sites across sunny Lodi, this mouthwatering white shows off California’s modern Golden Age of wine (2014 was the third in a string of exceptional vintages). With its seductively ripe fruit flavors and dash of spice (thanks to time in French oak), it’ll be delicious with roast chicken.

grapeAs Master of Wine Jancis Robinson says, “Lodi is a seriously interesting location for growing grapes.” Wine Enthuisast agrees – they named it the 2015 Region of the Year. Like Napa Valley, Lodi’s warm summer climate is tempered by occasional morning fog. While it’s better known for rich reds like Zinfandel, Lodi can also produce top Chardonnay with a ripe, tropical fruit character.

Chardonnay is one of the world’s most popular white grapes, being produced in all sorts of styles virtually worldwide. Its ability to adapt to different climates and soils make it an appealing variety for winemakers. The best-known (and most expensive) come from the vineyards of Chablis, Champagne and Burgundy’s Côte d’Or. However, great-value takes from California, Australia and even Spain are gaining popularity.

foodWith its ripe, honeyed-peach character and a lively lemon twist on the finish, this Chardonnay will pair beautifully with savory white meats. Try whole roasted chicken with garlic and herbs, sage-rubbed pork tenderloin or even grilled tilapia. For an equally delicious meatless meal, try a vegetable and quinoa casserole, or soft, creamy cheeses (our favorite is Brie).
