Movie & Wine Pairing

The Inaugural Lot No3
Cabernet Sauvignon, California

High Society (1956),
Tues. 12/23 @ 11:00 PM

What better to pair this classic, refreshing Pinot Grigio with than High Society ? The film’s love triangle of a divorced socialite (Grace Kelly), her ex-husband (Bing Crosby) and a tabloid reporter (Frank Sinatra) who converge on her Newport, Rhode Island wedding matches up perfectly with this wine’s hint of nuttiness. While The Philadelphia Story first brought this story to the screen in 1940, this gorgeous Technicolor remake—with music by Cole Porter— makes the perfect pairing with a wine of vibrant fruit notes and a tangy finish.

Domaine Ginestières is a deliciously succulent Cabernet full of ripe cassis flavors. It’s made by Claude Gros (below), who should know a thing or two about the great Bordeaux variety. He perfected his skills at top estates in Bordeaux, home to some of the priciest Cabernet Sauvignons in the world. This great value is from the Minervois, a top appellation in France’s deep, sunny south. Your holiday guests will love it (and think they’re drinking something that costs much more).

WM_JeanCharles Boisset_ColorClaude Gros has earned major plaudits for his Bordeaux reds. Robert Parker gave his Château La Fleur Morange Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 96 Points, calling it “a remarkable tour de force in winemaking from the brilliant Claude Gros.” But Claude, a Minervois native, prefers living and working in the south. His Domaine Ginestières shows all the rich, sun-baked flavors you’d expect from this region, balanced with the Bordeaux-like finesse that’s earned him that top reputation.

photo-Cabernet Sauvignon-2011Minervois is a top appellation in the Languedoc, where rugged, rocky terrain, extreme temperatures and gnarly, low-yielding old vines make for a challenging – but very rewarding – winemaking environment. “High-caliber reds at low prices” is how Wine Spectator sums it up. The gently sloping, oldvine vineyards of Domaine Ginestières deliver velvety Cabernet with spicy richness.

The black fruit flavors and silky tannins in this wine make it lovely to sip on its own. It’s also a treat at the dinner table with roast rack of lamb or even hearty vegetarian dishes. Anything with eggplant, squash, mushrooms or a variety of beans would be a perfect complement to the wine.
