The Red Sedan Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
South Australia

Dodge City (1939) & Virginia City (1940)

Charismatic Australian star Errol Flynn is the perfect match for a “big” red wine like this bold Shiraz. These two Westerns were made within a year of each other and feature the same director, screenwriter and crew. For an actor usually associated with adventure films and characters like Robin Hood, Flynn’s Western roles are a tribute to his versatility and unmatched charm.

Welcome to the RedHeads Studio, in the heart of Australia’s Barossa Valley. This tiny boutique was set up 10 years ago by some of the country’s hottest winemaking talents (guys with day jobs at Australia’s largest wine corporations). They were convinced the wine could be better – if only they didn’t have to make 40,000 cases to please shareholders. The studio was a chance to moonlight, to craft the kind of wines they were really passionate about. That means tiny batches, an everything-done-byhand approach and wines that burst with true Australian character.

THE WINE The Red Sedan is a classic Shiraz/ Cabernet blend (a tribute to a beloved ’66 Ford Falcon – the original symbol of the studio). For the 2014 model, winemaker Rob Mack selected fruit from the prestigious Clare Valley and McLaren Vale regions. The next step’s key: small-vat fermentation, with handpunching down of the grapes. It takes a strong arm, but draws out serious color and flavor.

They’re leading the charge in the new Australian wine revolution – demonstrating to all who taste their creations that Australian wine is about heart and soul (not bland, over-produced “critter” wines). And the critics are raving. “Not formulaic potions … obviously made with care and passion,” writes Jancis Robinson, MW. After The Wine Advocate tasted one of their Cabernets, they wrote: “If it said Napa Valley on the label, you could multiply the price times six.”

We suggest decanting and enjoying The Red Sedan in large glasses, with rosemary-encrusted rack of lamb or a pork sausage ragù with fennel. But, you could easily serve it with all kinds of red meat – grilled steaks, juicy burgers, game roasts etc. Charred chicken thighs or veggies would also be a hit. And because it’s so smooth, you can easily drink it solo.
