The Waxed Bat Reserve 2017
Mendoza, Argentina

Spartacus (1960)

Kirk Douglas has never played a more heroic character than the rebellious Spartacus, a historical figure who led his fellow slaves in a dramatic revolt against the Roman Empire. The film is a bold effort, helmed by a young Stanley Kubrick and costarring legendary actors like Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Jean Simmons, and an Oscar-winning Peter Ustinov – an incredible cast that gives the movie a layer of polish, matching well with this deliciously rich Argentine blend of Cabernet and Malbec.

Opi Sadler (below) is the talent behind our hugely popular red, The Waxed Bat. He was so happy with its success, he decided to make a ‘big brother’ Reserve. Using Cabernet and Malbec from his favorite vineyards, Opi gave the super-concentrated juice a 12-month slumber in fine oak barrels. Last vintage, his efforts were rewarded with a Platinum ‘Best in Show’ Trophy and 95 points from the Decanter World Wine Awards. Judges raved: “Big and bold, with a good fresh finish ... An extremely polished effort.” This new 2017 release is every bit as impressive.

Opi has proven he’s fearless when it comes to winemaking. As a child, he’d explore the dark corners of his grandfather’s cellar, encountering sleeping bats and dusty, waxdipped bottles along the way. Hence this wine’s intriguing name – a tribute to Opi’s memories of the cellar and his beloved grandfather. Given its origins it’s no surprise that The Waxed Bat is renowned for its deep color (“so thick you could paint with it,” says Decanter).

WM_OpiSadlerRedWineGlassMendoza is Argentina’s capital of fine wine and is the place to go for top-class reds. Vineyards here were established in the mid-1500s. Perched at 2,500 feet above sea level, it’s blessed with near-perfect growing conditions, including a wide diurnal (day-to-night) temperature range. Warm, sunny days ripen the grapes to their flavor-packed peak, while chilly nights lock in intense aromas.

food (17)Argentine Malbec has become one of the world’s most sought-after steak reds. But when married to Cabernet Sauvignon (beef’s other classic match), it’s downright irresistible. The Waxed Bat Reserve’s structure and ripeness are perfect for fattier cuts of steak, like tender rib-eye. If meat isn’t on the menu, mature, hard cheeses like Cheddar or Parmesan will be delicious.
