Few crime films can compare to the original gangster classic with Paul Muni’s commanding lead performance. Pair it with an equally dark and intensely flavored Australian Shiraz. Despite the movie’s ferocity, director Howard Hawks has created a richly designed and beautifully photographed experience that echoes the spectrum of savory and black fruit notes in your glass.

Aussie talent Sam Trimboli has made his Yarrunga Field reds for 20 years, and they still enjoy a huge following with our customers. No surprise there – he’s won hundreds of top awards for his wines. This ‘Special Reserve’ alone scooped a double-gold medal at the China Wine & Spirits Awards. Crafted with grapes from prime-sited vineyards in South Eastern Australia, this is classic Aussie Shiraz. It bursts with rich, dark-fruit flavors, plus touches of spice and herbs. A perfect partner for savory, barbecued meats.

Known as ‘Syrah’ in France (where it makes legendary Northern Rhône reds like Hermitage), peppery, berrypacked Shiraz is Australia’s great contribution to wine. With its bold, fruit-forward character, Yarrunga Field is crafted in the turbocharged style that made Aussie Shiraz famous. In the country’s hottest regions, the grape takes on a rich, sun-drenched character. These days, you’ll also find it grown in cooler climates, where it yields wines with more subtle fruit flavors and often lower alcohol.

VY_Australia_sunnyThe heart of Aussie winemaking, South Eastern Australia covers the bottom right corner of the continent and encompasses many smaller wine regions, including premium New South Wales (where Sam sourced most of the grapes for this Shiraz). Fun fact: New South Wales became Australia’s first wine region in the late 1820s, when James Busby, “the father of Aussie wine,” planted vine cuttings here.

bbq_lambkebabsAustralians love to barbecue – and this Shiraz is the perfect companion for any feast with rich, savory meats. Its soft finish will enhance the juiciness of a variety of dishes, including lamb kebabs, braised beef short ribs, or game sausages. Vegetarian? Your red will also pair nicely with a portobello mushroom ‘burger’ and a side of hearty, grilled vegetables.
