48 HRS. Zinfandel 2020

Paso Robles, California

Classic Movie Pairing

48 Hrs. (1982)

This classic action comedy helped to launch the "buddy cop" genre. Eddie Murphy, in his first movie, stars as Reggie Hammond, a convicted armed robber who is given a 48-hour release to help Inspector Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) stop a pair of cop killers. Launched to modest fanfare, it gained enough steam to end up as the seventh-highest grossing film of the year. Robust and equally exciting, this California Zinfandel makes for a perfect partner to the onscreen antics.

THE WINE

When an unlikely duo are paired up to catch killers in the film 48 HRS., you can expect loads of action and laughs. Luckily, we have the perfect sidekick for watching this buddy-cop blockbuster. Zinfandel is California’s signature red, and this is a gorgeous example. Winemaker Doug Roosevelt crafted this bold beauty using grapes from premium Paso Robles vineyards and the great 2020 vintage. His berry-rich red offers layers of velvety dark berry and hints of spice.

THE GRAPE

According to figures from the USDA’s Statistics Service, Zinfandel is California’s third most-planted red wine grape (behind Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot)—yet it’s regarded by many as the state’s signature red. Depending on the intensity of the pressing and how long the grape skins intermingle with the wine, Zinfandel can make rich reds or lovely rosé ( the harder the pressing and longer the skin contact, the deeper the color and flavor).

THE REGION

48HRS. Zin comes from Paso Robles, one of California’s warmest and most exciting regions for full-flavored, top-value wines. Wine Spectator’s Tim Fish calls it “one of California’s most dynamic regions.” And the name Paso Robles, meaning ‘Passage of the Oaks,’ came from Spanish Franciscan monks, who were the first to plant vineyards here in 1797.

WITH FOOD

With its dark berry flavors and hints of spice (classic Zinfandel hallmarks), 48 HRS. is especially delicious served with rich stews and Italian dishes—from simple, spicy tomato- sauced pasta to chicken Parm. It’s also the perfect red for chili, barbecue ribs, pulled pork, steak kebabs or burgers. Alternatively, it’s definitely smooth enough to enjoy solo.
