THE WINE
In each adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday novella, the leading man has made a unique mark on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. There’s Reginald Owen’s deeply sympathetic portrayal in 1938’s A Christmas Carol, Alastair Sim’s sinister, yet comedic, take in the 1951 version (originally titled Scrooge) and
even Michael Caine’s charming rendition in 1992’s The Muppet Christmas Carol. Similarly, the grape varieties in this sumptuous California red weave together to create a complex, rich wine. If you could bottle holiday cheer, it might just taste like this special red—brimming with black plum, blackberry jam and hints of cocoa.
THE REGION
Lodi is “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines” (vinepair.com). While the region’s famed for old-vine Zinfandel, it’s increasingly known for other top-notch reds. The warm climate is tempered by morning fog, helping prolong the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine for extra-concentrated flavors.
THE STYLE
As a category in the U.S., red blends like Doohickey are extremely popular—and they’re still on the rise. But it’s by no means a new trend. Winemakers in Old World regions like Bordeaux, Rioja and many parts of Italy have known for centuries that blending different grapes together can result in a wine of greater complexity and finesse. It’s a perfect way to enjoy the best of many grapes, not just one.
