Alambrado Malbec Blanco 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
Love Affair (1939)This elegant Malbec is skillfully balanced between being both delicate and rich. It strikes the perfect tone for this celebrated romance directed by Leo McCarey. A shipboard affair leads to a pact to meet six-months later on top of the Empire State building. Starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer, the story proved so popular it would be remade two times, as An Affair to Remember (1957) and Love Affair (1994) and, of course, it was memorably referenced in Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
THE WINE
Led by José (below), Argentina’s legendary Zuccardi family crafts some of our best-selling wines. Their (red) Alambrado is one of our most popular Malbecs, so we were thrilled when they offered us first dibs on the NEW white version. It’s made from the family’s same top-quality Malbec grapes. The difference? The winemaking team keeps the “juice” away from the red grape skins to retain the lovely white color. Crisp and fresh, this rare white Malbec brims with delicate floral aromas plus elegant red-fruit flavors. See over for our favorite food pairings.
THE FAMILY
Zuccardi is “one of the top names in Argentine wine,” writes The Wine Advocate. The family has made quality wine in Mendoza since 1963, when Alberto Zuccardi first opened his bodega. Today, the estate is run by Alberto’s son José and grandson Sebastián. Decanter ranked Sebastián No. 1 on its “Top 10” list of South American winemakers and has declared all three men “among the five most influential personalities in Argentine wine.”
THE COUNTRY
Argentina is winemaking paradise. It’s not hard to see why. Vines are irrigated with fresh Andean snowmelt. Endless sunshine ripens grapes to perfection, producing richly concentrated flavors. Land is available (for now!) at prices Napa and Bordeaux can only dream about—which means you enjoy full flavors and incredible value. While Malbec leads the way, native Bonarda and Cabernet also thrive here.
WITH FOOD
Red Malbec is the classic partner for steak, but we suggest lighter pairings with this lovely white Malbec. When you fire up the grill, opt for chicken thighs, quinoa burgers or veggie kebabs instead. Other delicious pairings include crisp salads, roasted white meats or fresh seafood. Spicy ceviche or fish tacos would be tasty South American-inspired matches.
