Alfred Hitchcock Petit Verdot 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
The Lady Vanishes (1938)Upon release, this mystery thriller set box office records in Great Britain and made Alfred Hitchcock one of Hollywood’s most sought after directors. Starring Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave, it tells the story of a young woman on vacation who tries to find an elderly friend that has seemingly disappeared without a trace. It pairs perfectly with this equally complex and thrilling Petit Verdot that will leave you enthralled.
THE WINE
Distinctive, complex and not without its quirks, Petit Verdot is the perfect red to honor Alfred Hitchcock, the Master of Suspense. This lesser-known red grape variety is originally from Bordeaux, France, but it reaches new levels of richness on location in California’s sunny Lodi region. The wine starts off with intense blueberry and raspberry flavors and has, like Hitchcock’s suspenseful films, a delightfully juicy finish. It’ll make your next viewing of a Hitchcock film (or any classic movie) even more thrilling…just wait until you taste it!
THE REGION
Located about 70 miles inland from California’s storied Napa Valley, Lodi is “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines” (vinepair.com). While the region’s famed for Zinfandel, it’s increasingly known for other top-notch reds. The warm summerV climate is tempered by morning fog, helping prolong the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine, for extra-concentrated flavors.
THE GRAPE
One of Bordeaux’s classic grapes, Petit Verdot has been (unfairly) overshadowed by its famous co-stars, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape’s thick skin helps protect it from vineyard maladies and imparts color, structure and firm tannins to the wines. These qualities make Petit Verdot an ideal grape to for blending, but it also shines on its own (as you’ll taste here).
WITH FOOD
Enjoy this rich Petit Verdot with an equally hearty meal (and, of course, the classic Hitchcock film below!). It will delight with a wide range of foods. When it’s warm enough to grill, go for burgers, pulled pork or veggie kebabs. In the cooler months, try roasted meats (from beef to pork) or root vegetable stews.
