Alfred Hitchcock Rear Window Barbera 2021

Lodi, California

Classic Movie Pairing

Rear Window (1954)

Savor one of Hitchcock’s most iconic and entertaining mysteries, featuring the unforgettable pairing of James Stewart and Grace Kelly. Stewart plays a photographer who uncovers a neighborhood murder (or does he?) while trapped at home with a broken leg. Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Director, this remains one of Hitchcock’s most beloved films.

THE WINE

Rear Window is the Master of Suspense at his finest —gripping plot twists, a star-studded cast and an ending that leaves your jaw flat on the floor. Much like the big discovery made by Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly, this delicious red will surprise you (in a good way). It’s made from the Italian grape Barbera, which has found a welcome home in California. Brimming with red raspberry and dried cranberry flavors, it’s super smooth and, like the film, has a delightfully juicy finish. Perfect for enjoying alongside its namesake movie and a heaping plate of spaghetti Bolognese.

THE GRAPE

A native of Italy, Barbera thrives in California. But even with all the advancements in DNA profiling, Barbera’s precise origins remain shrouded in mystery. Enigmatic backstory aside, “Barbera has plenty of qualities that would seem to make it a likely household name: fairly soft tannins, an ability to age well and bright, lively acidity…it is also one of the easiest wines in the world to pair with food,” writes The Wall Street Journal.

THE REGION

As Master of Wine Jancis Robinson says, “Lodi is a seriously interesting location for growing grapes.” (Wine Enthusiast certainly agrees— they named it the 2015 Region of the Year.) Like the famous Napa Valley, Lodi’s warm summer climate is tempered by occasional morning fog. While it’s best known for old-vine Zinfandel, Lodi can also produce other fine reds with seriously intense flavors.

WITH FOOD

With its brilliant balance of vibrancy and smoothness, this Barbera pairs well with a range of foods. Take inspiration from the grape variety’s native Italy and serve it alongside your favorite pizza or pasta dishes. It’ll also be delicious with roasted or barbecued meats (anything from pork ribs to a beef brisket will be great). Or enjoy a glass with firm, aged cheeses.
