Back Garden Albariño 2021

Clarksburg, California

Classic Movie Pairing

Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941)

Robert Montgomery stars as Joe Pendleton, a boxer who is mistakenly claimed by heaven before his time is up. Claude Raines stars alongside him as Mr. Jordan, his celestial guardian, who tries to right the situation by finding another body that Joe can inhabit. An instant classic that won two Academy Awards (Best Screenplay and Best Original Story), it was later remade into another classic, Heaven Can Wait (1978). Both the movie and wine are light and fun. This fresh, elegant Albariño provides a little extra zing for this must-see comedy.

THE WINE

California’s premium Clarksburg region is home to some of the state’s most interesting grape varieties, like Albariño. This Spanish native thrives here (especially in a great vintage like 2021), as you’ll taste in this peachy, gold-medal-winning exclusive. Sip this elegant Albariño and find a bit of backyard bliss wherever you carve out your corner of space in the sun.

THE REGION

Drive through northern California, and you’ll see homes with back gardens planted with a diverse array of grape vines. Small plots like these have helped introduce numerous varieties to the Golden State—such as Albariño. Originally from Spain, this star white grape variety has found a welcome home in the premium Clarksburg region. Bordered by the cooling waterways of the Sacramento River Delta, Clarksburg is optimum winemaking territory. The growing season is long, due to the moderating effect of the surrounding water. And the region’s deep, fast-draining soils are ideal for growing more than 30 different grape varieties.

THE GRAPE

Hailed by Jancis Robinson as “one of the most exciting and vibrant white wines,” Albariño is one of Spain’s two flagship whites (the other is Verdejo) and the star white of northern Portugal. It’s quickly gained a following, making appearances on trendy wine lists nationwide. The grape’s marine note (sometimes it displays a faint, salty tang) is rather unique—see if you can taste it here.

WITH FOOD

Enjoy a chilled glass of Back Garden whenever you want to feel refreshed. It makes a wonderful aperitif. At meal time, pair this lovely Albariño with seafood, such as grilled tilapia or seared scallops. It’ll also be delicious alongside white meats (we suggest roasted chicken or pork chops with a pear reduction). Fresh salads or veggie plates make tasty matches, too.
