Blazing Star Viognier Roussanne 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
3 Godfathers (1948)The notion of a “holiday film” typically conjures up snowy thoughts, but this classic fable is instead set in the sprawling desert. Starring John Wayne, Harry Carey Jr. and Pedro Armendáriz, it tells the Christmastime story of three bank robbers turned heroes who shepherd an infant to safety across blazing sands with a sheriff hot on their heels. John Ford’s robust Western pairs perfectly with this rich, full-bodied white.
The Wine
During his long career, 20th-century artist Ernest Clayton painted over 200 watercolors of wildflowers gathered in the countryside around his Northern California home. Inspired by the gorgeous Blazing Star painted on the label, this luscious blend of Viognier and Roussanne is as elegant as Clayton’s work. From premium Lake County and the great 2020 vintage, it offers perfumed honeysuckle, golden apple and tropical fruit characters.
The Grapes
Viognier and Roussanne are two of the great white grapes of southern France. They often star in the opulent (and pricey) blends of the Rhône Valley, most famously white Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Although it was down to just a few acres of vineyards about 20 years ago, today Viognier is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, as wine lovers around the world embrace its heady apricot and honeysuckle character. Roussanne, though not as well known as Viognier in the U.S., deserves a place in your wine rack and imparts lovely floral/spice notes to Blazing Star.
The Region
Located just north of Napa Valley, Lake County is one of the fastest growing wine regions in the U.S. (It’s currently home to over 30 wineries and 9,000+ acres of vineyards.) The county benefits from a long, warm growing season that gives grapes ample time to ripen, along with the moderating influence of Clear Lake (the largest body of freshwater in California), which helps grapes retain freshness.
With Food
Rich, full-bodied whites can sometimes overpower food, so feel free to experiment with flavorful pairings. A classic match is roasted chicken—especially when topped with a creamy garlic sauce. This smooth white will also be delicious with seafood (we love lobster risotto or grilled scallops) or hearty vegetarian dishes, such as butternut squash ravioli.
