Blues Brothers Petite Sirah 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
The Blues Brothers (1980)What better to pair with a Blues Brothers wine than the iconic movie after which it was named? Starring the unforgettable duo of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as Jake and Elwood Blues, the film rightly sits in the pantheon of comedy classics. This bold, full-bodied Petite Sirah will help put you into the mood for a fun and laugh-filled night.
The Wine
Jake and Elwood Blues (aka, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) slammed into the cultural consciousness when they debuted as musical guests on Saturday Night Live. Their charttopping album was followed by a feature film, The Blues Brothers, in which the brothers embark on a mission from God to reunite their band and save the orphanage where they were raised. Made in celebration of the film, this punch-packing Petite Sirah hails from California’s stellar 2019 vintage and brims with rich dark fruit and sweet spice notes.
The Grape
Petite Sirah is also known as Durif (named for François Durif, the French botanist who first discovered the variety) and is most likely a crossing of Syrah and Peloursin that originates in France’s Rhône Valley. It’s a “grape that takes no prisoners,” says Tim Atkin, MW. Plantings are up 13% over the last five years—and no wonder. With its inky-black color and full body, the wines are hard to resist (just ask a member of its fan club, PS I Love You).
THE VINTAGE
Thanks to a near-perfect growing season, California is in for “another classic vintage,” and “growers and wineries say the 2019 vintage is looking pretty darn good” (wine-searcher.com). The vineyards received ample rain to replenish vines early in the season, followed by a warm, dry summer that extended the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine, allowing the fruit to develop ripe, concentrated flavors
With Food
This limited-edition Petite Sirah is quite versatile and guaranteed to hit a high note with weeknight classics. Think juicy burgers (beef, turkey or black bean) or your favorite takeout pizza (anything from simple pepperoni to veggie supreme). You could also pair it with barbecued or roasted meats, pasta or stews. Save a glass for kicking back with a movie after dinner.
