Bold Move 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
Bonnie and Clyde (1967)A bold move itself, this rebellious but now-iconic film helped set the direction for American cinema for a full decade. A reflection of the youth movement (both inside and outside Hollywood), it stars Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the notorious bank-robbing couple. What better to pair with a robust red blend?
THE WINE
Whether you’re talking about the rugged landscape or the innovative winemaking, there’s not much about California that isn’t bold. Taste for yourself with Bold Move, a rich, full-bodied exclusive that showcases exactly how exhilarating California wine can be. Crafted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah—all ripened to perfection, thanks to the great 2021 vintage— it brims with luscious black fruit and spice notes. One sip and you’ll see why judges at the San Francisco International Wine Competition awarded it a gold medal.
THE STYLE
As a category in the U.S., red blends like Bold Move are extremely popular, and they’re still on the rise. In fact, 40% of California wines produced in 2017 were red blends. But it’s by no means a new trend. Winemakers in Old World regions like Bordeaux, Rioja and many parts of Italy have known for centuries that blending different grapes can result in greater complexity and finesse. It’s a perfect way to enjoy the best of many grapes, not just one.
THE GRAPES
Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of the reds, loved for its deep-colored, black currant-rich wines. Most famously, it’s the variety that powers Bordeaux’s legendary First Growths. In Bold Move, Cabernet is married with Petit Verdot (another Bordeaux native) and Petite Sirah. Petit Verdot adds structure and firm tannins to the wine, while Petite Sirah gives body and concentrated dark-fruit flavors.
WITH FOOD
It should come as no surprise that this rich red demands an equally bold food pairing. We love it alongside burgers topped with smoky bacon, caramelized onions and other flavorful toppings. Or enjoy it with steaks, ribs and more barbecued classics. In the cooler months, try roasted meats or hearty stews—a spicy chorizo chili would be a deliciously bold move.
