Classic Movie Pairing
Jules and Jim (1962)One of the most celebrated films of the French New Wave is this poetic look at WWI-era France. Francois Truffaut directs the story of a love triangle between Bohemians Jules (Oskar Werner), Jim (Henri Serre) and Catherine (Jeanne Moreau) before, during and after the Great War. Beloved by critics and film buffs, its influence is still felt in films today and it’s a lovely match for this aptly named Pinot Noir.
THE WINE
Much like a captivating poem, this lovely Pinot Noir entices you with beautiful expressions, inviting you to discover hidden depths and demanding you to experience it again and again. Fittingly named Bottle Poetry, it hails from California’s 2023 vintage, which is “one of the best in recent memory” (Wine Industry Advisor). Crafted with grapes from Lodi and beyond, it offers lively raspberry and violet flavors, plus a subtle savory nuance. Enjoy it alongside your favorite book of poems or with family and friends.
THE GRAPE
Nicknamed “The Heartbreak Grape,” Pinot Noir is infamously difficult to grow. The same thin skin that’s responsible for giving the wines their trademark pale color also renders the grape susceptible to vineyard maladies and damage from harsh weather. Pinot ripens early and thrives in cool climates—while its spiritual homeland is the Côte d’Or in France’s Burgundy, it has found a delicious new character in cooler corners of New Zealand, Oregon and California, all of which produce world-class Pinot.
THE REGION
Most of the Pinot Noir was sourced from Lodi, “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines” (vinepair.com). Lodi benefits from a warm climate and cool fog, which helps prolong the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine for extra-concentrated flavors. While famous for Zinfandel, it’s also home to great Pinot.
WITH FOOD
Like all top-notch California Pinot Noir, Bottle Poetry is deliciously food friendly. We recommend pairing it with plank-grilled salmon topped in a berry glaze (to play up the wine’s fruity notes), but any meaty fish will be tasty. You could also try slow-roasted pork, turkey (Pinot’s a great Thanksgiving pick) or chicken. And, of course, it makes a refreshing aperitif, too.
