Bowhead Chardonnay 2019

Horse Heaven Hills, Washington

Classic Movie Pairing

Chariots of Fire (1981)

This beloved film shares the experiences of two British athletes from different backgrounds as they train to compete in the 1924 Olympics. Though initially thought by some to be old-fashioned or niche, the film went on to win over both critics and moviegoers, ultimately nabbing the Academy Award for Best Picture. The vibrant, creamy flavors of this Chardonnay pair nicely with the movie’s inspirational story.

The Wine

Although California often steals the Chardonnay spotlight, savvy wine enthusiasts know that Washington State also offers elegant, ripe-fruited examples. Named after the Arctic whales that can sometimes be spotted along Washington’s Pacific Coast, Bowhead brings together two of the state’s historic industries: whaling and wine. Crafted with grapes grown in the premium Horse Heaven Hills, this gorgeous Chardonnay offers vibrant orchard fruit, lemon pie, and creamy vanilla characters. Guaranteed to impress on its own or when served with food (see over for our top pairings).

The Grapes

Chardonnay is one of the world’s most popular white grapes, being produced in all sorts of styles virtually worldwide. Its ability to adapt to different climates and soils makes it an appealing variety for winemakers. The best-known (and most expensive) come from the vineyards of Chablis, Champagne, and Burgundy’s Côte d’Or in France. However, great-value takes from the United States, Australia, and even Spain are gaining popularity.

The Region

Horse Heaven Hills is part of the Columbia Valley, Washington’s largest appellation. The region’s diverse microclimates and rich, alluvial soil are ideal for growing grapes. Plus, thanks to the Earth’s tilt, the valley logs more hours of growing season sunlight than its southern neighbors, Napa and Sonoma. This allows for a greater shift in day-to-night temps, which really develops flavor complexity.

With Food

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more versatile white than this fine Chardonnay. It makes a delicious aperitif and pairs well with a variety of foods. Start with a plate of soft cheeses (Brie is our favorite match). For the main course, try roasted poultry or pork chops. You could also serve creamy vegetarian dishes like pumpkin soup or butternut squash ravioli.
