Burt Reynolds Zinfandel 2020
Classic Movie Pairing
Smokey and the Bandit (1977)Burt Reynolds starred in many movies over his career. A fan favorite, this comedy helped elevate him to new levels of stardom. Reynolds is the Bandit who is responsible for helping divert police attention away from a truckload of contraband beer as it heads across state lines. Directed by legendary stuntman Hal Needham and costarring Sally Fields, it also features a memorable turn by Jackie Gleason as Sheriff Buford T. Justice, one of his most iconic roles.
The Wine
Never taking himself too seriously, actor, director, and producer Burt Reynolds was a true movie maverick—perhaps most famous for the Smokey and the Bandit film series. Our tribute to this American iconic had to be the maverick of the wine world: Zinfandel. Although it’s crossed borders under many aliases (as you’ll read below), Zinfandel really thrives in sunny California’s premium Lodi region. Thanks to the warm 2020 vintage, you’re in for super concentrated flavors of red and black fruits.
The Grape
According to figures from the USDA’s Statistics Service, Zinfandel is California’s third most-planted red wine grape (behind Cabernet and Merlot)—yet it’s regarded by many as the state’s signature red. Originally from Croatia (where it was known as Tribidrag), this wandering variety found its way to sunny Puglia in Italy (where they call it Primitivo) then later to the Golden State as Italians came seeking their fortunes. Regardless of locale or name, this grape is famous for being fruity and food friendly.
The Region
Though vines have always grown wild in the region, serious grape cultivation started in this area of California during the mid-1800s. By 1900, a local newspaper declared that it was the region’s “growing industry.” During Prohibition, the demand for Lodi grapes actually rose. Today, Lodi declares itself “Home of the Zin” and holds a large, well-attended annual festival celebrating all things Zinfandel.
With Food
Zinfandel is one of our go-to barbecue wines. It makes a great match for burgers, ribs, kebabs and everything in between. In the cooler months, it’s equally delicious alongside roasted beef, pork or turkey. You could also take inspiration from Zinfandel’s homeland and pair it with hearty Italian fare, like eggplant parmigiana or good ol’ spaghetti and meatballs.
