Cala Rey Tinto 2021
Classic Movie Pairing
Man of La Mancha (1972)This red blend hails from the home of legendary adventurer Don Quixote, a literary figure who has a troubled cinematic history. Many have tried but few have succeeded in bringing the Miguel De Cervantes story to the big screen (including both Walt Disney and Orson Welles). This fun adaptation of the Broadway musical stars Peter O’Toole, Sophia Loren and James Coco and may be the most successful version to date.
THE WINE
From the age of four, Tomasso Ciampoli would help his grandfather craft a wine that was proudly sipped at every family celebration. When Tomasso visited the high-altitude village of Alpera and saw its gnarled, ancient bush vines, he was inspired to set up shop and revive his family’s winemaking traditions. With just one taste of this intense, pure and red-fruited Tempranillo-Syrah, you’ll see that Tomasso’s venture is so much more than a passion project. His efforts have already been rewarded with a gold medal from Berliner Wein Trophy.
THE REGION
Castilla La Mancha is Spain’s biggest wine region, located south and southeast of Madrid. The broad, flat plains are covered in low bush vines, which are carefully pruned to protect grapes from the extreme heat. In fact, ‘Manxa’ means ‘parched earth’ in Arabic (the ancient Moors had a big influence here). Temperatures reach a scorching 104 ̊ in summer, then drop to 32 ̊ during the long, cold winters.
THE LEGACY
Welcome to Quixote country. La Mancha itself is perhaps more familiar to many as the setting of Miguel de Cervantes’ early classic, Don Quixote, and the later musical based on that novel, called Man of La Mancha. Home to castles, windmills and vineyards, red grapes lead the charge here— mainly Tempranillo, Cabernet, Garnacha, Monastrell, Syrah and Bobal.
WITH FOOD
Take inspiration from the Spaniards and enjoy this silky red with classic tapas like jamón serrano, patatas bravas (fried potatoes with varying sauces) or spicy meatballs. For the main course, serve succulent roast lamb, cochinillo (suckling pig) or hearty stews. After dinner, enjoy a glass on its own or alongside firm, aged cheeses like Manchego.
