Capisco Pinot Grigio 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
Magnificent Obsession (1954)A crisp Pinot Grigio perfectly counterbalances this popular melodrama, drenched in longing, grief, and passion. The film is directed by Douglas Sirk, known for mixing passionate love affairs with dramatic twists of fate. It stars Rock Hudson as a playboy who dedicates his life to medicine in order to find redemption with a blind widow (Jane Wyman). Pour a glass and prepare to be stirred.
The Wine
Pinot Grigio lovers – really all fans of crisp dry whites – will be very excited about this fresh discovery. Back in 1928, Ettore Anselmi planted vines in northern Italy’s premium Friuli region, right near the crystal-blue Adriatic Sea (read about this gorgeous region below). Today, his son Luigi tends the vineyards and has crafted a thrilling Pinot Grigio. Capisco (meaning ‘I understand’) delivers waves of ripe pear, apple, and pineapple characters, plus a fine mineral structure. One sip and you will understand why we raced to secure every last drop.
The Grape
With its palate-cleansing purity, a simple mention of ‘Pinot Grigio’ makes people thirsty. But they don’t all taste the same. This northern Italian gem is refreshing, citrusy, and well balanced. The word grigio (‘gray’) refers to the grape’s color, which ranges from a blush pink to a pinkish-gray. In France’s Alsace region and the U.S.’s Pacific Coast, it is known as Pinot Gris and made in a richer, more opulent style.
The Region
Italy’s top Pinot Grigios are now acknowledged as world-class wines. For the best, head to cool-climate havens like Friuli, where the locals describe their pristine, mountain-ringed vineyards as aria condizionata (air conditioned). In this spectacular northeastern corner, the Alps and the Adriatic Sea create ideal conditions for crisp, zingy whites like Capisco.
With Food
With its deliciously fresh fruit flavors, Capisco Pinot Grigio will make a wonderful aperitif. When you’re ready to serve it with food, Luigi recommends grilled fish (such as tilapia with a squeeze of lemon). You could also pair it with a classic chicken Waldorf salad or tuna salad sandwiches. In cooler months, tried roasted white meats or honey-glazed ham.
