Capital Z Zinfandel 2020

Lodi, California

Classic Movie Pairing

12 Angry Men (1957)

Sidney Lumet’s directorial debut starring Henry Fonda is revered for its stark, original take on the courtroom drama and its memorable cast of supporting actors including Lee J. Cobb, Ed Begley and E.G. Marshall. Capital Z makes its own bold statement as a strong Zinfandel and also touts an excellent supporting cast of mixed berries and subtle spices that linger after each sip.

The Wine

When setting out to make this first-class Zinfandel, award-winning winemaker Matt Praetzel made a beeline for Lodi. Known as the Zinfandel capital of California (and arguably, the world), this premium area is home to the Golden State’s oldest Zin vines. Matt sourced the grapes from a top Lodi grower (they gave him a friends-only price, so he couldn’t reveal their name) and the superb 2020 vintage. Capital Z boasts a history of gold-medal acclaim from top competitions, plus layers of velvety red- and black fruit flavor and sweet spice notes.

The Grape

According to figures from the USDA’s Statistics Service, Zinfandel is California’s third most-planted red wine grape (behind Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot)—yet it’s regarded by many as the state’s signature red. Originally from Croatia (where it was called Tribidrag), this wandering variety found its way to sunny Puglia in Italy (where they call it Primitivo) then later to the Golden State as Italians came seeking their fortunes.

The Region

Though vines have always grown wild in the region, serious grape cultivation started in this area of California during the mid-1800s. By 1900, a local newspaper declared that it was the region’s “growing industry.” During Prohibition, the demand for Lodi grapes actually rose. Today, Lodi declares itself “Home of the Zin” and holds a large, well-attended annual festival celebrating all things Zinfandel.

With Food

This bold, concentrated Zinfandel deserves an equally flavorful food pairing. When it’s warm enough to fire up the grill, go for barbecued meats like juicy steaks, saucy ribs or gourmet burgers. In the cooler months, it’ll be delicious with roasted meats or hearty vegetarian stews. And, of course, fans of big reds will enjoy sipping Capital Z all on its own.
